What is a Self-Drilling Screw?
Self drilling screws are fasteners that eliminate the need to pre-drill holes. They provide high pullout strength, shear strength and maximum thread engagement and positive fastening in both structural steel and timber constructions.
Types of Self-Drilling:
Types of self drilling screws can include T17 for timber fixing, drill point for fixing in metal, universal point for fixing into both metal and timber and needle points for various applications including plasterboard into timber or light gauge steel.
Common Applications for Self-Drilling Screws:
Self drilling screws can be used for fastening metal roofs into timber/steel, steel frame-work, landscaping applications, decking, structural steel fabrication, fencing & formwork applications.
How to use a Self-Drilling Screw:
Screws are designed with features to suit a wide number of applications and materials and it is important that they are used correctly. In most cases installed with a screw gun driven at correct RPM per manufactures guidelines. It is also important to choose the correct fastener depending on application. This can include correct gauge, threads per inch (TPI) and length.
Suitable Materials for Self-Drilling Screws:
- Roofing & cladding – Cyclonic and non Cyclonic
- Steel fabrication
- Steel house framing
- Plasterboard application
- Polycarbonate roofing
- Electrical fittings
- Security applications
- Cement sheeting
Who Should Use Self-Drilling Screws:
Assembly and on-site labour is greatly reduced by eliminating the task of alignment or the need to pre-drill holes. Fastening operations can be completed in less time. This will result in the benefits of speed and ease of installation.
As fastening is reduced to one operation, alignment problems are eliminated. It is more economical to use self-drilling screws than to drill, tap and fasten or nut & bolt in the traditional manner.
