B+BTec Diamond Coring Auto Feed Unit - Mornington Pier Restoration, Victoria

Mornington Pier Restoration: BBTec's Auto Feed diamond coring rig saved the day for PW Johnson Constructions when challenged with a massive refurbishment at Mornington Pier.

Innovative products solving complex projects

During heavy sea swells at Mornington Pier in Victoria, side panels were subjected to extreme pressure which counter-levered and dislodged some panels from the pier and into the seas below.

Ultimately the pier was left with extensive damage, and left PW Johnson Constructions with the massive task of refurbishing the pier. In order to prevent damage to the pier reoccurring upon another freak weather system 36mm reinforcing bar was to be drilled and chemically adhered deep into the existing pier structure to secure the panels from levering away from their fixed surface. Dillon Construction Fasteners from Carrum Downs contacted ICCONS to see how we could help in the realm of diamond core drilling, to make this lengthy process easier for their customer - PW Johnstone Constructions.

One of the major hurdles faced was when drilling into the side of the pier, there was a huge amount of reinforcing bar that had to drill through, which can take an extended period of time with ill-equipped drilling systems.

BBTec out of the Netherlands is world renowned for having the best core bits for fast drilling through the thickest steel and hardest concrete whilst remaining sharp.

After making contact with Paul (PW Johnstone Constructions) it was decided that the BBTec Karat 300 machine, coupled with their new Auto Feed system, would be the ideal solution.

Paul manufactured a sliding jig for the side of the pier which housed the equipment. As time, tides and weather were playing a huge part in this retrofit, any time saving was invaluable. Being able to slide the rig along the pier without the need for fastening at every required location saved a lot of time and in turn money.

Upon request, ICCONS manufactured some custom length core bits of 41mm x 800mm long, using standard core-bit segment, suitable for the task at hand. After a short training session with Paul’s employees, they soon had the hang of what was required and how best to get the job done.

Paul then decided as the Auto Unit was doing all the work, the operators time could be best spent using another manual rig beside it, therefore drilling 2 holes with one operator resulting in halving the cost per hole.

The outcome was a great result, with teamwork from the distributor (Dillon Construction Fasteners) the customer (PW Johnson Constructions) and the supplier (ICCONS).
